位于滋贺县小波市的市民医院，当地医疗技术比较落后，虽然有京叶医大的团队驻扎坐镇，但是这些医生视前途比病人更重，对于稍有危险的手术推诿塞责，致令延误了几多患者治愈的良机。平成元年（1989年），从匹兹堡学成回国的外科医师当麻铁彦受邀来至市民医院，担当第二外科室的主任。当麻将病人的生命放在首要位置，拼尽全力做好每一次手术。他的高尚医德赢得了病患和团队的钦佩，却令高傲的京叶医大心生忌恨。某日，当麻挑战当时日本法律尚未允许的脑死肝移植手术，所有的矛盾都被推倒浪尖上来……。One day, thinking that it will make your wife and friends smile, you shave off the moustache that you have had for the last ten years. Viewers who like their conclusions tidy may rebel, but those who relish outstanding performances in the service of an intriguing idea will be entertained.
