龍(黃秋生飾)夜讀《牡丹亭》，夢見書中女主角杜麗娘，生愛慕之意，時妻子夜歸，對他不甚理睬。學生麗(崔家寶飾)穿上戲服飾演杜麗娘，龍見麗與夢中的麗娘相似，大感愕然。龍為哄妻子，特意買名貴首飾送她，但妻子冷言相向，並承認有外遇，提出離婚。 龍心灰意冷流連圖書館，巧遇麗，二人意外被困，徹夜互吐心事，漸生情愫。龍為免影響升職，勸麗收斂感情，自己亦加以壓抑，但始終情不自禁。事情敗露，龍不獲升職。經院長規勸，龍恍然大悟，坦然向麗提出分手。。Many Thais suffering from poverty choose the lottery over labor or frugality to get out of poverty.
