About 30,000 migrants from Hena...。1960年代初，城市知识青年响应祖国号召，自愿到边疆支援建设。上海地质学院同学肖继业（毕鉴昌 饰）和林育生（达式常 饰）被分配到青海某地质队工作。时间不长，林育生就受不了青海艰苦的生活环境，以看病为由返沪。肖继业带领勘探分队在大山里找到新的矿种，在一次作业中肖不慎砸伤了腿，地质队领导借机让他回上海治腿并参与地质报告答辩，同时了解一下林育生的情况。回沪后发现，林是思想里长了“病”，他一方面忙答辩，一方面和育生的妹妹林岚（李秀明 饰）一起做育生的工作。肖自己去医院查腿，医生告诉他腿上长了骨瘤，有可能要截肢，闻言心感沉重：对于一个年青人来说，这次遇上了真正的困难。回家后奶奶（张瑞芳 饰）的一席话启发了他，他坚定地对奶奶说“留有一条腿，我也一样干革命”....。
