抗日战争时期，全国人民端着土枪、洋枪，挥着大刀、长矛在抗击日本鬼子，全国燃起了抗日的烽火。喝黄河水长大的黄河人，共有着一个黄河的属性“永不低头，永远向前”。下游的黄河在咆哮、在怒吼，抗日的硝烟和打鬼子的吼声飘到了黄河的上游，于是，黄河上游边上的一户李姓人家，也在黄河的吼声和全国人民保卫黄河的大合唱中挺身而出，走进了不平静的岁月。故事中的李户人家的“娘”如同吞泥含沙的黄河一般，吞咽着金、木、水、火四个儿子因不同的命运而带来的情感撞击与生活历练。娘用她的“老理”养育了四个儿子，也用她的“老理”教育约束着她的儿子们。。Home from their honeymoon, the Kirbridges settle into their home in Greenwich.
