本片又译作《党同伐异》，是D．W．格里菲思最具创作野心的作品。由于受到《国家的诞生》惊人卖座的影响，格里菲思遂再接再励拍摄一部场面更大，内容更有深度的影片。他花了一年半的时间，动用了二百万美元的制作费，拍摄成片长220分的巨片（原版长480分）。该片讲述了由4段相隔数千年互不相关的故事连缀而成 ：《母与法》、《基督受难》、《圣巴托洛缪大屠杀》和《巴比伦的陷落》。故事虽不相关，但反映了一个共同的主题：祈求和平，反对党同伐异。。Young Jim Hawkins, while running the Benbow Inn with his mother, meets Captain Billy Bones, who dies at the inn while it is besieged by buccaneers led by Blind Pew. Jim and his mother fight off the attackers and discover Billy Bones' treasure map for which the buccaneers had come.
